Autumnal Newsletter [Sent] - The 'Gravy Boat'

The 'Gravy Boat' is sailing away, carring my 'Autumnal News'. If you'd like to receive it, and have not for whatever reason, then send me an email. This is a new piece I've made this year. In June I began developing it, after a recommendation. After drawing, models and trial and error with different materials I arrived at this design. Inspired by the 'Merlin Rocket' sailing boats that race in Salcombe.

Ed Hill Metal Art - Christmas Cards 2020

These are my Christmas cards, they're a little bit different. Not your conventional Christmas card, a few weeks ago I went on the hunt for some holly. After trying a few different ideas, I decided I liked the vivid greens and reds of the holly.

Featured today on St. Luke's Hospice Plymouth

Just sharing a post from St. Luke's Facebook page today. Very happy to be featured, as I use a lot of there cutlery/metalware donations in my artwork. Like this cockerel for instance. Made mainly from cutlery and serving trays. This is still one of my favourite sculptures, based on a cockerel in the village where I live. A Welsummer/Buff Sussex.

Click on the photo below to be taken to their Facebook page.

Here he is standing big and tall for the camera, I spent a couple afternoons following him surreptitiously around with a camera, and tape measure! I don't have chickens myself, and it was fascinating watching him and the hens. The hens were really gentle and inquisitive animals, they came right up to me and pecked me if I had anything with metal on. Like my camera case sticking out of my back pocket, which gave me a jump!

Malborough C of E Primary School - Visionary Artwork

Last week, I had the pleasure of visiting Malborough C of E Primary School. I created this tree with the help of the children's designs. It represents thier visionary statement: 'The roots to grow, the wings to fly within God's love'. It now on display in the school's Spiritual Garden, where I attended it's blessing ceremony. It has felt special to be a part of this project.

It is created from recycled stainless steel serving trays, teaspoons, kebab sticks and tea strainers.

The event has been added to 'South Hams Journal' and you will be able to see the whole article here

The recycled metal fish

Fish wall art made from recycled metal. I am deliberately using rusty mild steel for it's colour and texture. This is something I hope to develop further in my work, see also the 'Sphere'.

I have recycled metal from: stainless steel serving trays; bike parts; ball bearings from miscellaneous domestic wares and scrap mild steel sheet from a local industrial unit.

It takes me a long time to design a new sculpture. I have to draw, model and hone designs over a long period of time. I have been working on the fish for the last 3 years. Below you will see some of my earlier prototypes. So, when I have a design I am happy with, I like to create duplicates. I like the way this picture shows that when along side each other they're all slightly different. This can be due to the changing parts I have in hand, or to the fact that each one is handmade, and individually made.

As one door closes, another one opens...with all the uncertainty and cancellations of events this year, just yesterday I discovered on the Delamore Arts page an upcoming 'online' exhibition. Hopefully this won't be cancelled. It is called 'Reflections' put on by the South West Academy of Fine and Applied Arts. Closing date is 8th October. If your an artist you may also want to check it out. I will be sure to post more information if I pursue this.

There are many more models too! If you are passing by my studio, and want to see more about the fish, then you are more than welcome to make an appointment and visit.

Stone Lane Gardens - Ed Hill Metal Art - Outdoor sculptures

These are 2 of my recycled metal art sculptures photographed at 'Stone Lane Gardens'. Both sculptures I have tried to capture the beauty of the damselfly and cockerel. I have paid close attention to proportion, symmetry and balance.

I wanted to create a striking sculpture for a pond, (a piece of pond art, this is something I have not seen much of) It is based in a smooth stone, so can be placed on a pond-liner, so the stem appears to come out of the water. It plays to the strengths of metal as a sculptural medium. In that, one can make large delicate looking artwork. Unachievable in other mediums. It uses new stainless steel for the wings, but most else is recycled. My most memorable damselfly memory is swimming in Ermington river during the heat of the day, and observing the electric blue damselfly going about their business above the water.

Ed Hill Metal Art - Damselfly

'Something worth crowing about!' I am pleased the way the cockerel brings a burst of light to the dark foliage of the trees. Both of these sculptures are the result of many hours study, using photos, sketches and working with recycled materials to best capture their forms.

Damselfly - Stone Lane Gardens Sculpture Trail - Chagford, Moretonhampstead, Devon.

Hot off the press, here is my recycled metal art damselfly, I have designed this to anchor into a rock, so it can be displayed in someone's pond. Stone Lane Gardens will be exhibiting artwork from local artists till the end of October 2020.

This photo does not convey the size of this sculpture, it is fairly large. Roughly 50cm in length, it is made from an assortment of recycled metal. The 'piece de resistance', however is some special Italian 'new' stainless steel, which I have used to create the green wings. I love the way it changes colour from different angles and gives a kick of colour. I am very happy with it.

This idea had evolved from the 'big green dragonfly', I have had the idea of a damselfly resting on a twig in my head for some time, but it wasn't until the other day that it came off. I was going to create another dragonfly, however I thought the body just didn't seem right for a dragonfly, and suited a damselfly. I looked around for something to form it's tail and found the perfect tube of stainless steel, a tent pole or something like that. This is something I'd selected along time ago, from one of my charity shop foragings. I'm so glad I collected it, like so many other pieces of scrap, sometimes they come in very handy.

I also have artwork currently at Trail Art UK sculpture exhibition 2020 in Teignmouth. They are currently holding a vote for the 'Publics' favourite sculpture. If you like my artwork, please give me a vote! ;)

All you have to do is click on the photo to vote, that's it! When you have voted you will get to see how well all the other artwork is doing. My piece is the 'Sphere'. This link takes you straight to the voting page: https://www.trailart.co.uk/?page_id=3692

Ed Hill Metal Art - World War 2 callipersEd Hill Metal Art - Sphere

I'm using reclaimed stainless sheet and mild steel to create this large sphere. I'm hoping it will be an intriguing sculpture, with texture, colour and shape. It is developmental for me, as I am exploring two contrasting metals. I want it to be simple enough to allow people to project what they like onto it. to appear soon at Teignmouth TrailArtUK Reclaimed Sculpture exhibition. Bottom right: World War 2 callipers given to me by a family friend. His dad made these, and they were used to make tanks during WW2. I have adapted them to cut out circles with one of my machines, so still being used to make circles!

Fish

This will soon be arriving at Teignmouth TrailArtUK Reclaimed Sculpture exhibition. This will be displayed in Pavilions, but it can also be viewed at my gallery too.

I have wanted to make a fish for the last 2 years, My ideas have gradually evolved. I have numerous models, drawings and prototypes of previous ideas you can see at my gallery/workshop. This is the first proper fish design I am happy to sell. It is designed to hang on the wall or can be made 3D to suspend from a ceiling.

I look forward to developing it further.

Reclaimed Metal Art 'TrailArt' Teignmouth 2020

I am currently preparing artwork for 'TrailArt 2020' Teignmouth's waterside reclaimed metal art sculpture trail. Monday 20th July - Sunday 27th September  https://www.trailart.co.uk/ Here is my proposal. This will be a sphere, made from rusted steel and stainless. I am unsure on the size, as I have not attempted anythnig like this before. I want to experiment with transitioning rust to shiny steel. Maybe it will work, maybe it won't...

Weekly Update

Delamore Arts is still in full-swing. Last week I posted this bespoke metal wren. I also delivered work to The Devon Guild of Craftsmen, at Bovey Tracey for part 2 of their application process.

I also learned about Teignmouth's reclaimed sculpture exhibition called 'Trail 2020' which has been going for several years now on the seafront. It sounds very appealing to me and I am pondering applying.

For more details about the wren see the right hand tab for pricing, dimensions ect. Whenever I sell a piece of work I always create another one for my repertoire. So, when people want to visit me they have lots to see and if I am asked to make another one I can. Even though they are bespoke and include different parts I like to make them generally as close as possible. The latest wren is photographed below and can be viewed on YouTube.
